The Town of Smithfield Library formally opened in the summer of 2011. Volunteers prepared the books and other media in such a way that patrons can sign out items on their own. The library is overseen by two librarians who both hold Master’s in Library Science degrees. While the circulation of materials is done manually (using book cards), the catalog is online and gives an up-to-date view of the library’s holdings.
The library’s book collection is in two separate rooms as follows:
- Meeting room (adjacent to the town clerk’s office) contains nonfiction books, biographies, large print and a computer for public use.
- Main Library (on the right just after the double doors) holds fiction, children’s fiction, audio books, videos and an area for checking out books.
