Boat Registrations
The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife requires a “Lake and River Protection” sticker to be issued with all boat registrations. The fee for the Resident sticker is $10 and $20 for Non-resident, in addition to all other registration fees. The stickers are to be affixed to the water craft next to the registration sticker. It is unlawful to operate a motorboat or personal watercraft on inland waters without this sticker. The purpose of the sticker is to prevent the introduction of Invasive Aquatic Plants to Maine waters. The sale of the stickers funds the prevention program.
Boat registrations are subject to excise tax. The amount of the tax is based on the length of the boat, the age of the boat, and the horsepower of the motor. The registration fee is based on the horsepower of the motor. An agent fee of $1.00 is also collected. Boat excise tax must be paid in the owner’s town of residence regardless of where the boat is docked. Boat registrations expire December 31 each year.
